Upgrade SEI
This section explains how to upgrade SEI to the latest version and ensure a safe, smooth transition. Before you begin, schedule the upgrade for a time when a server restart is possible. While some upgrades don’t require a reboot, restarting Windows can help avoid dependency issues and ensure optimal performance. If you are upgrading from version 7, follow the additional steps in Upgrade from Version 7.
If you plan to move SEI to a new server as part of your upgrade, complete the steps in Move Central Point before you upgrade.
Before upgrading, confirm that your current version of SEI, the Excel Add-in, and your templates are compatible and supported.
- Excel Add-in retro-compatibility to identify which Excel Add-in versions are supported and whether an upgrade is required.
- Template retro-compatibility for compatible and required template versions, including any Central Point upgrade requirements.
Upgrade from version 6.7, 7.X, 8.2
If upgrading from 8.2.7.X or earlier, install .NET Framework 4.8 first. This version is required for both SEI and the Excel Add-in. Restart your server or workstation after the installation.

Test in a safe environment
Set up a test environment to try the new SEI version before upgrading your production server. This prevents unexpected issues in your live environment.
- Keep your production environment running as usual while testing.
- Work with a qualified SEI expert to copy your production Central Point folder and the SEI and SEICube databases to your test environment.
- When testing is complete, upgrade your production environment using the same steps.
Back up all data
- Back up the SEI database.
- Back up the Central Point shared folder.
- If your data warehouse or cubes contain historic or hard-to-rebuild data, back those up as well.
Update the SSL certificate
Obtain a new SSL certificate
- Acquire a new certificate in
.pfxformat and its password. - Repeat the process on all servers running SEI.
Install the new certificate
- Copy the
.pfxfile to the server that hosts your web applications. - Double-click the
.pfxfile to launch the Certificate Import Wizard. - In the wizard, select Local Machine as the store location and click Next.
- Click Next.
- Enter the certificate password and click Next.
- On the Certificate Store screen, accept the default and click Next.
- Click Finish to complete the import.
If your environment uses multiple servers, repeat this process for each one.
Update certificate bindings in IIS
- Open IIS Manager (press the Windows key + R, type
inetmgr, and press Enter). - In the left panel, expand your server name and select Sites.
- Right-click your website and choose Bindings.
- In the Site Bindings window, select the
httpsbinding and click Edit. - In the Edit Site Binding window, select the new certificate from the dropdown list or use Select to browse.
- Click View to confirm you’ve chosen the correct certificate.
- Click Ok to apply changes.
If multiple sites are using the old certificate, IIS will prompt whether to update all bindings—choose Yes when prompted.
Upgrade SEI server
Starting with Version 2022 Release 1 (January), you do not need to uninstall the existing SEI Server.
Simply run the new installer and choose either Basic or Advanced installation as appropriate. The installer detects your existing setup and performs the upgrade.

- Click Confirm to start. The process may take several minutes.
Verify upgrade and test
Check the following to confirm a successful upgrade:
- Test SEI views, dashboards, reports, and workbooks to verify they open without errors.
- Test prompts in the application.
- Evaluate system performance; if you notice slow response times or errors, see Performance Review for diagnostic steps and tuning guidance.
